Which format should I choose?
- JPG: photos; small files, works everywhere. No transparency.
- PNG: graphics, screenshots and logos; lossless and supports transparency.
- WebP: modern format with smaller files than JPG or PNG; supported by all current browsers.
When converting a transparent PNG to JPG, the transparent areas become white.
FAQ
Is anything uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
Is there a file limit?
No fixed limit, but very large images need a lot of memory and may fail on phones.
Step by step
- Choose the output format in Convert to first. JPG is preselected; PNG and WebP are in the same menu.
- Pick a Quality level: High (0.95), Good (0.85, the default) or Smaller (0.7).
- Drag one or more images onto the drop area, or press "Choose images" and select several files at once.
- Each file appears in the list below with its new name and a size comparison such as "photo.jpg (2,310 KB → 640 KB)". Press Download beside the ones you want.
The format and quality menus are read at the moment each file is processed, so change them before dropping the files. To get the same pictures in a second format, simply drop them again with a different setting; the newest results are inserted at the top of the list.
What happens to your picture
Your browser decodes the file, paints it onto an invisible canvas of exactly the same pixel width and height, and then asks the canvas to encode a new file in the format you chose. The image is never resized. Files are handled one after another rather than all at once, which keeps memory use lower when you drop a big batch.
The output name is the original name with the extension swapped, so "logo.png" becomes "logo.jpg". The original file is untouched.
The quality setting is a number between 0 and 1 handed to the browser's encoder. It matters for JPG and WebP. PNG is lossless, so the quality menu has no effect on PNG output, and a PNG made from a photo is usually much larger than the JPG of the same photo.
Transparency and white backgrounds
JPG cannot store transparency. Before drawing the image, the tool fills the canvas with solid white, so any transparent or semi-transparent area becomes white in the JPG. If you need to keep a see-through logo, choose PNG or WebP instead; both keep the alpha channel. Converting in the other direction, from JPG to PNG, cannot bring back detail that JPG compression already discarded; it only wraps the same pixels in a lossless container.
Worked example
A phone screenshot saved as PNG might be 1.8 MB because screenshots contain sharp text and flat colour. Converting it to JPG at Good quality typically produces a much smaller file but can add faint blur around letters. Converting a 4 MB photo from JPG to WebP at Good quality will often give a smaller file than the original. Because results depend on the content of each picture, the size comparison printed next to every result is the reliable guide; try Smaller and High on one file and compare the numbers.
Common uses
- Turning WebP images saved from websites into JPG or PNG for programs that do not open WebP.
- Making a lighter JPG or WebP of a photo to attach to an email or upload to a form with a size limit.
- Converting BMP or GIF files, which this tool accepts as input, into a modern format.
- Flattening a transparent logo onto white for a document that needs JPG.
Tips and limits
- Re-encoding a JPG as JPG again loses a little more quality each time. Keep the original and convert from it.
- Metadata such as camera details and embedded colour profiles is not carried over, because the picture is redrawn on a canvas. This is useful if you want to avoid sharing location tags, but you should not rely on it as a privacy guarantee for every case.
- An animated GIF is converted from a single frame, not the whole animation.
- Browsers decide what they can encode. If a browser cannot produce WebP it may quietly return a PNG, so check the size and type of the downloaded file.
- If a file cannot be decoded, its row shows "could not read this image" and the rest of the batch continues.
More questions
Why did my PNG get bigger after conversion?
Converting a photo to PNG stores every pixel without loss, which is bigger than JPG's compressed data. PNG shines for flat graphics, not photographs.
Which quality level should I pick?
Good is a sensible start for photos. Use High if you will edit the file further, and Smaller when file size matters more than fine detail. Compare the printed sizes to decide.
Can I convert many files at once?
Yes. Select or drop several files and they are processed in order; each gets its own download button.
