How to convert HEIC to JPG

  1. Choose or drop your .heic files (you can select many at once).
  2. Pick JPG or PNG and the quality.
  3. Download each file when it finishes.

What is HEIC?

HEIC (also called HEIF) is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11. It is about half the size of JPG at similar quality, but many Windows apps, websites and printers cannot open it. Converting to JPG makes the photo work everywhere.

Is it really private?

Yes. The conversion code runs locally in your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server, so there is no upload wait and no copy of your photos anywhere but your device.

FAQ

Will quality drop?

JPG is a lossy format, so a little detail is lost. At quality 90+ the difference is hard to see. Choose PNG for a lossless copy (files are larger).

Is there a file size or count limit?

No fixed limit. Very large batches depend on your device memory, so convert in groups if your browser slows down.

Does it keep EXIF data like date and location?

Browser-based conversion usually drops most metadata. If you need to keep location data, keep the original HEIC too.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, on any modern browser: Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on desktop and mobile.

Why does my file fail to convert?

Rarely, a HEIC variant (for example some 10-bit or multi-image files) is unsupported. Email us the details at the contact page.

Step by step: converting a batch of iPhone photos

  1. Copy the .heic files from your phone to your computer, or open this page on the phone itself and pick them from the photo library.
  2. Drop them on the box or press "Choose files". You can select dozens at once. Files are processed one after another, and each gets its own line with a status: "Converting...", then a Download button.
  3. Before you add files, decide on the output. JPG is the right choice for almost everything. PNG is lossless but produces much larger files. The quality slider runs from 50 to 100 and starts at 92.
  4. Press Download next to each finished file. When two or more files are done, a "Download all files" button appears.

The "Download all files" button does not build a ZIP archive. It simply clicks every individual download link in turn, 0.3 seconds apart. Your browser may ask whether this site may download multiple files; allow it, or use the per-file buttons if the prompt is blocked.

What happens to each file

The page loads a small open-source decoder (heic2any) that runs inside your browser tab. It decodes the HEIC image and re-encodes it as JPEG or PNG. The output file keeps its original name with the extension swapped, so IMG_4021.HEIC becomes IMG_4021.jpg. Files whose name and type do not look like HEIC or HEIF are skipped with the message "Not a HEIC file" rather than being guessed at.

Some HEIC files contain more than one image, for example a burst or a photo with a stored alternate version. The converter returns only the first image, so you get one picture per file. A Live Photo is converted as its still frame; the short video clip is a separate file and is not touched.

Choosing a quality value

The slider only affects JPG, because PNG stores every pixel exactly. JPG quality is a trade between file size and visible artifacts such as blocky skies or smudged fine texture. As a rough guide:

Expect the JPG to be larger than the HEIC you started with. HEIC uses a more efficient codec, so the same picture usually needs more bytes in JPG. If your goal is only to fit under an upload limit, lower the quality in steps of 5 and compare.

Common reasons people convert

If you would rather avoid conversion in the future, iPhones can shoot JPG directly: in Settings, open Camera, then Formats, and choose "Most Compatible". The trade-off is larger files on your phone.

More questions

Why is my converted JPG bigger than the original HEIC?

HEIC compresses photos more efficiently than JPEG, so the same image needs more storage once it is converted. Lowering the quality slider reduces the size, at the cost of some fine detail.

Can I convert to PNG and still use the quality slider?

You can move the slider, but PNG is lossless, so the setting has no visible effect on PNG output. Use it only with JPG.

What is the difference between HEIC and HEIF?

HEIF is the container standard; HEIC is the common file name for HEIF files that hold images compressed with the HEVC codec, which is what iPhones write. The converter accepts both .heic and .heif extensions.
